When it comes to addiction treatment, there are several potential modalities – therapeutic care and holistic care being the two predominant treatment methods that most inpatient treatment facilities will employ. Most reputable treatment centers will combine proven therapeutic care with time-worn holistic methodologies, seeing as it has been repeatedly shown that comprehensive and integrated care is the most successful in paving the road for long-term sobriety. Some holistic approaches to addiction treatment include art therapy, yoga, and meditation, nutritional guidance, and acupuncture.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicinal technique, first developed thousands of years ago. Acupuncture is now utilized across the world and helps many individuals overcome health-related issues like migraines, back problems, and general pain or discomfort. In some cases, acupuncture is used as part of a comprehensive treatment program for mental health concerns – including addictive disorders.
This holistic method involves small, sterile needles that are carefully placed into different points of the body. Today, many treatment centers will offer acupuncture to their clients, seeing as this modality has been proven to alleviate symptoms of post-acute withdrawal, including anxiety, depression, insomnia, and psychological cravings.
Acupuncture and Drug Addiction Treatment
Some modalities are crucial to drug addiction recovery. Therapy is always necessary, and every reputable drug addiction treatment facility will offer intensive therapeutic care – in an individual and a group setting. Learning relapse prevention skills will always be necessary, and developing coping mechanisms and basic life skills is also a fundamental component of treatment.
Acupuncture is considered an “alternative method” of drug addiction recovery, and it is not necessary for someone to successfully recover. However, it is beneficial. It has been repeatedly proven that auricular acupuncture (acupuncture of the ear) is especially beneficial in alleviating symptoms of withdrawal. The US National Library of Medicine published a study in 2016 on the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of drug addiction. The study confirmed that auricular acupuncture had proven to be effective in treating those suffering from drug addiction and alcoholism in both the US and in Europe.
When small needles are placed carefully into the ear, the acupuncturist will generally focus on five main points. The specific areas that are targeted include:
- The kidney point: it is believed that this point leads to reduced feelings of stress, anxiety, and fear and helps to rebuild and revitalize major organs that have undergone damage as a result of substance abuse or dependency.
- The liver point: it is believed that this point will help to reduce irritability and aggression, and remove toxins from the blood and the liver.
- The lung point: it is believed that this point will reduce feelings of grief and sadness while working to repair the lungs and improve their functioning.
- The sympathetic point: it is believed that this point will work to soothe the central nervous system while promoting stress relief and relaxation.
- Shen men: this specific point will work to alleviate feelings of anxiety.
Of course, acupuncture must be performed by a qualified and experienced professional. Many treatment centers will bring in an acupuncturist once or twice per week.
